A Grade Is Never Just a Number

You converted your grade — but what does it actually mean? Climbing grades are more relative than most climbers realize, and a converted number tells only half the story.

The same grade climbs completely differently depending on the style. A 7a on small crimps demands very different finger strength than a 7a on slopers or a technical slab. A climber who crushes compression problems might struggle on a vertical crimp wall at the same grade — and vice versa. Grades measure difficulty, not a single physical quality.

This gets even more interesting when you factor in indoor gyms. Most climbing gyms don't use an international grading scale at all. Many use color-coded systems, numbered levels (like 1–9), or their own custom difficulty bands. A "red route" at one gym has nothing to do with a "red route" at another. One more thing worth knowing: grades are set by humans, and setters have different styles, preferences, and reference points. A grade 7a at a competition gym in Madrid may feel softer or harder than the same grade at a local training wall. This is normal, and experienced climbers learn to use grades as rough orientation — not as absolute truth.

Understanding Climbing Grades

Originally from Fontainebleau, France, this is the international standard for bouldering. Uses numbers with letter modifiers and + signs.

Are climbing grade conversions always accurate?

No — and they were never meant to be. The different grading systems evolved independently in different countries, and a direct 1:1 conversion doesn't always exist. The Font/Fb scale and the V-Scale for bouldering were developed separately and don't share the same granularity at every level. For sport climbing, the French and UIAA scales align reasonably well in the mid-grades but can diverge at the extremes. Think of conversions as educated estimates, not exact equivalents. When in doubt, climb the route and judge for yourself.

What's the difference between sport climbing and bouldering grades?

They measure fundamentally different things. Bouldering grades (Font/Fb, V-Scale) rate a single boulder problem — a short sequence of moves, typically without a rope. The grade reflects the difficulty of the hardest move or the overall sequence. Sport climbing grades (French, UIAA) rate a full route — typically 15–30 meters — and factor in sustained difficulty, the number of hard sections, and sometimes the exposure or protection. A V5 boulderer is not automatically a 7a sport climber, and vice versa. The physical and mental demands are quite different.

Which grading system should I use?

Use whatever system your local climbing community uses — that's the most practical answer. If you're in Europe and focus on sport climbing, French grades are the standard. For bouldering in Europe, Font/Fb is dominant. If you're in North America or follow American social media, V-Scale is the default for bouldering. UIAA grades are most common in Germany, Austria, and parts of Eastern Europe. When travelling or comparing with climbers from other regions, just use this converter — it takes two seconds.

How do I progress to the next climbing grade?

Grade progression is rarely linear. Most climbers hit plateaus where more effort doesn't equal more progress — usually because they're training the wrong things.
